In Nicaragua it is called Guardatinaja, and it is raised as the prime gourmet Nicaraguan Wild Meat.

In Belize, it is referred to as a " gibnut ," and considered a delicacy ; it was once served to H. M. Elizabeth II and subsequently has the nickname " the royal rat ".
In the Peruvian Amazon, it is known as majás.
