Traditionally, the vote was conducted by acclamation, by selection ( by committee ), or by plenary vote.
Acclamation was the simplest procedure, consisting entirely of a voice vote, and was last used in 1621.
Pope John Paul II abolished vote by acclamation and by selection by committee, and henceforth election will be by full vote by ballot of the Sacred College of Cardinals.
