from

Irenaean theodicy, posited by Irenaeus ( 2nd century AD – c. 202 ), has been reformulated by John Hick.
It holds that one cannot achieve moral goodness or love for God if there is no evil and suffering in the world.
God created an epistemic distance ( such that God is not immediately knowable ) so that we may strive to know him and by doing so become truly good.
