Heinlein and his second wife divorced in 1947, and on October 21 of the following year he married Virginia " Ginny " Gerstenfeld, to whom he would remain married until his death forty years later.

Shortly thereafter, the Heinlein couple moved to Colorado, but in 1965 her health was affected by the altitude.

They moved to Santa Cruz, California while constructing a new residence in the adjacent Bonny Doon, California.

The unique circular California house, which, like their Colorado house, he designed with Virginia, and built himself, is on Bonny Doon Road.
