The Padres ' 2007 season began April 3 in an away game against the San Francisco Giants, winning it 7 – 0 in front of a capacity crowd of 42, 773 at AT & T Park, defeating $ 126 million staff-ace Barry Zito in his Giants debut.
The Padres bullpen has continued to be the team's strength as in recent years, opening the season with 28 scoreless innings, a Major League record to start a season.
At the start of the season the Padres starting rotation order was as follows: Jake Peavy, Chris Young, Clay Hensley ( injured, replaced by Justin Germano ), Greg Maddux, David Wells.
