Upon completion of principal photography, art director Max Parker assembled a rough cut that so confused studio heads they assigned Warren Low to re-edit it.
It was released on July 22, 1936, retitled Satan Met a Lady ( the book had a line describing Sam Spade as looking " rather pleasantly like a blonde Satan ").
By then, Davis was in London, having been placed on suspension for refusing to portray a lumberjack in God's Country and the Woman.
