A scintillation counter measures ionizing radiation.
The sensor, called a scintillator, consists of a transparent crystal, usually phosphor, plastic ( usually containing anthracene ) or organic liquid ( see liquid scintillation counting ) that fluoresces when struck by ionizing radiation.
