By 1900, Sikeston had a population of 1, 100, and two drainage ditches had been completed.
By this time, the city had two banks, two newspapers, and three hotels.
One of the hotels built between 1895 and 1898 was a three-story brick hotel that was later known as the Mashall-Dunn Hotel which was later listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Prominent individuals who stayed at this hotel included Harry S. Truman, Alben W. Barkley, Tom Pendergast.
