It opened in 1863 as a terminus for the Main Northern Line from Newcastle, bringing great prosperity to the town before the line was extended further north in 1869.

Historically, the next inbound is Belford, however this station was closed on 4 September 2005.

Designed under the supervision of John Whitton, Singleton Railway Station is listed on the Register of the National Estate.
