Kirby eventually realized he could not support his family as a filmmaker and decided to settle down in Bemidji, Minnesota and manage a video store.

Reed could not accept this change in their circumstances and divorced Kirby ; he received full custody of their daughter.

Reed initially told Alex that Kirby had left her and kidnapped their daughter, but Alex tracked him down and learned the truth.
