Super Bowl XXXVII was originally awarded to San Francisco in 1997 by the NFL owners.

The 49ers had recently announced plans for a new stadium, and were rewarded with the Super Bowl dependent upon its completion.

However, the stadium plans had stalled by the fall of 1998, and thus the NFL reopened the bidding for the game.

San Diego, who had lost out on Super Bowl XXXVI, announced its interest.

The city was then awarded the game during a May 1999 meeting at Atlanta.

As of 2011, and for the foreseeable future this is the last Super Bowl to be played in California.

Of the first 37 Super Bowls, 11 were played in California.

It is also the last Super Bowl to date in which part of game was played in sunlight.
