Due to the rapid growth of the village during the 19th century, there were problems with overcrowding, poor housing, high infant mortality, water supply and drainage.

In an attempt to address these problems, Tillicoultry Burgh was created in 1871.

It lasted until 1975 when it disappeared as a result of local government reorganisation.
