This collapse of financial support and businesses left workers unemployed.
Many of these workers, who became affected by the 1837 disaster, were members of a union.
It was very hard for them to stay together in an economic hardship and the trade union movement came to a bump in the road.
But the economy was restored by the early 1840s and trade unions started doing better.
National labour unions were forming, different than ones in the past, consisting now of members of the same occupation.
