According to Minnesota Place Names, Vesta Township was settled in 1868 and organized May 20, 1880.
It was named on the suggestion of Fred Vail Hotchkiss for his sister, Vesta Vail Hotchkiss.
The city of Vesta was platted in 1899 and incorporated February 9, 1900.
The post office began operation in 1899, with Timothy L. Crowley as first postmaster.
After 1898, the Chicago and North Western Railway had a station.
