Hinduism, or Sanatana Dharma ( Dharma means moral duty ), has pivotal virtues that everyone keeping their Dharma is asked to follow, for they are distinct qualities of manusya ( mankind ) that allow one to be in the mode of goodness.
There are three modes of material nature ( guna ), as described in the Vedas and other Indian Scriptures: Sattva ( goodness, maintenance, stillness, intelligence ), Rajas ( passion, creation, energy, activity ), and Tamas ( ignorance, restraint, inertia, destruction ).
Every person harbours a mixture of these modes in varying degrees.
A person in the mode of Sattva has that mode in prominence in his nature, which he obtains by following the virtues of the Dharma.
