The United South of England Eleven ( USEE ) had been formed by Edgar Willsher in 1865 but the heyday of the travelling teams was over and their organisers were desperate to feature new attractions.

Grace had played for the USEE previously and he formally joined the club in 1870 as its match organiser, for which he received payment, but he played for expenses only.

He scored 215 for the Gentlemen which was the first time anyone scored a double century in the Gentlemen v Players fixture.
