Misskelley was a minor when he was questioned, and though informed of his Miranda rights, he later claimed he did not fully understand them.
The Arkansas Supreme Court determined that Misskelley's confession was voluntary and that he did, in fact, understand the Miranda warning and its consequences.
Misskelley specifically said he was " scared of the police " during his first confession.
Portions of Misskelley's statements to the police were leaked to the press and reported on the front page of the Memphis Commercial Appeal before any of the trials began.
