Several regional opera companies have produced West Side Story.

San Diego Civic Light Opera ( 1983 ), Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera ( 1965, 1967, 1974, 1984, 1990, 1999, 2008 ), and Banff Musical Theatre ( 1984 ) were among the first smaller regional companies to produce it.

Michigan Opera Theatre was the first major American Opera Company to produce West Side Story in late 1985.
