Predecessor buildings existed: One used during the 9th and 10th century against the Hungarians named Wifilisburg, another one was built in 1123 by Earl Friedrich von Arnsberg.
After his death in 1124 the building was demolished by farmers that he oppressed.
In 1301 earl von Waldeck sold the Wewelsburg to the prince-bishop of Paderborn.
A document about this acquisition proves that two fortress-like buildings stood on the hill: the " Bürensche -" and the " Waldecksche-house ".
