Cage said in an interview that he was " always attracted to those passionate, almost unbridled romantic characters, and Sailor had that more than any other role I'd played ".

Previous to being cast in the film, he had met Lynch several times at Hollywood eatery Musso & Frank Grill that they both frequented.

When Lynch read Gifford's novel, he immediately wanted Cage to play Sailor.
