After Sir William Meredith's death in 1923, Mulock was nominated for the primarily ceremonial role of Chancellor.
Mulock was supported by most elected representatives, but opposed by most professors.
The senate elected Sir Edmund Walker, but Walker died shortly thereafter.
Mulock was subsequently elected unanimously as Chancellor on April 28, 1924 and served until his death.
