In 1863, Reverend Anthony Bowen founded the first YMCA for Coloured Men in Washington, DC.
The renamed Anthony Bowen YMCA is still serving the Shaw area of Washington.
It became a part of the Metropolitan YMCA of Greater Washington in 1947.
