The Fortress of Louisbourg was the capital for the colony of Île-Royale, and was located on the Atlantic coast of Cape Breton Island near its southeastern point.

During the War of the Austrian Succession, known in America as King George's War ( 1744 – 1748 ), the third part of the French and Indian Wars ), he was one of several people who proposed an expedition against the French Fortress of Louisbourg on Île-Royale ( present-day Cape Breton Island ).

The island was settled by France as part of its colony of Île-Royale ( present-day Cape Breton Island ).

Acadians eventually built small settlements throughout what is today mainland Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, as well as Île-Saint-Jean ( Prince Edward Island ), Île-Royale ( Cape Breton Island ), and other shorelines of the Gulf of St. Lawrence in present-day Newfoundland and Labrador, and Quebec.

Large-scale campaigns were planned to capture Fort Duquesne on the Pennsylvania frontier and the fortress at Louisbourg ( on Île-Royale, now known as Cape Breton Island ).

They were Acadia, Canada, Newfoundland, Louisiana, Île-Royale ( present-day Cape Breton Island ), and Île Saint Jean ( present-day Prince Edward Island ).

In King George's War, Massachusetts governor William Shirley issued a general call to the New England colonies for an expedition against the French in Île-Royale ( present-day Cape Breton Island ).

Acadian settlements had primarily agrarian economies, although there were many early examples of Acadian fishing settlements in southwestern Nova Scotia and in Île-Royale, as well as along the south and west coasts of Newfoundland, the Gaspé Peninsula, and the present-day Côte-Nord region of Quebec.

Important settlements also began in the Beaubassin region of the present-day Isthmus of Chignecto, and in the St. John River valley, and settlers began to establish communities on Île-Saint-Jean and Île-Royale as well.

In 1719, to further protect strategic interests in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and St. Lawrence River, France began the 20-year construction of a large fortress at Louisbourg on Île-Royale.

The British returned control of Île-Royale to France with the fortress virtually intact three years later under the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle and the French reestablished their forces there.

After the first Siege of Louisbourg ( 1745 ), the British deported thousands of Acadians on Île-Royale to France.

Following the Seven Years ' War, Île-Royale and its constituent territories such as Isle Madame, reverted to British control.

It is remembered and has been commemorated by a bust in a park and a square in the city which was renamed Piazzo Lauro Di Bosis after the war.

A five-masted schooner built in 1919, the Carroll A. Deering was found hard aground and abandoned at Diamond Shoals, near Cape Hatteras, North Carolina on January 31, 1921.
