In 1294, the monk Kunpang Tukje Tsondru established the Puntsok Choling monastery at Jomonang, about 160 km northwest of the Tashilhunpo Monastery in Ü-Tsang ( Shigatse ), and the spiritual tradition that was established here became known as Jonang.

The city is located at an altitude of at the confluence of the Yarlung Tsangpo ( aka Brahmaputra ) river and the Nyang River ( Nyang Chu or Nyanchue ) in west Tibet and was the ancient capital of Ü-Tsang province.

The present Tibet Autonomous Region corresponds approximately to what was ancient Ü-Tsang and western Kham.

Amdo (; ) is one of the three traditional regions of Tibet, the other two being Ü-Tsang and Kham ; it is also the birthplace of the 14th Dalai Lama.

Under the Mongol Yuan Dynasty of Kublai Khan, Amdo and Kham were split into two commandaries, which, along with Ü-Tsang, were collectively referred to as the three commandaries of Tibet.

Ü-Tsang is the cultural heartland of the Tibetan people.
