Forever Changes is the third album by American rock band Love, released by Elektra Records in November 1967.

In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Forever Changes 40th in its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

"' Forever Changes ' made only a minor dent on the charts when it was first released in 1967, but years later it became recognized as one of the finest and most haunting albums to come out of the Summer of Love, which doubtless has as much to do with the disc's themes and tone as the music, beautiful as it is ," wrote Mark Deming in an entry for the online Allmusic guide.

"' Forever Changes ' is also an album that heralds the last days of a golden age and anticipates the growing ugliness that would dominate the counterculture in 1968 and 1969 ... ' Forever Changes ' is inarguably Love's masterpiece and an album of enduring beauty, but it's also one of the few major works of its era that saw the dark clouds looming on the cultural horizon, and the result was music that was as prescient as it was compelling.

The remaining personnel performed on nine of the eleven tracks on Forever Changes.

" Lee also noted that since the name of the band was Love, the full title was " Love Forever Changes ".

" That was three different songs ... yet they were brought together to sound like one, which was fantastic ," lead guitarist John Echols said of " You Set The Scene " in the liner notes by Andrew Sandoval for the " Collector's Edition " of " Forever Changes " that was released by Rhino Records in 2008.

"... Arthur's genius lay in his ability to imagine songs, with fully formed lyrics and melodies ," wrote John Einarson in " Forever Changes: Arthur Lee and the Book of Love ," an authorized biography on Lee that was released in 2010.

" Forever Changes " was included in its entirety on the 2-CD retrospective Love compilation " Love Story 1966-1972 ", released by Rhino Records in 1995.

The album was re-released in an expanded single-CD version by Rhino in 2001, featuring alternate mixes, outtakes and the group's 1968 single, " Your Mind and We Belong Together "/" Laughing Stock ", the last tracks that featured the " Forever Changes " line-up of Johnny Echols, Ken Forssi, Michael Stuart and Bryan MacLean ( Forssi and MacLean both died in 1998 ).

" The Forever Changes Concert " was released in 2003 to great critical acclaim and marked the first time many of the songs had been performed live.

Both versions include the complete " Forever Changes " album.

" In the liner notes to both sets, David Sinclair wrote that "' Forever Changes ' has always held a place of honour in the hearts of British fans.

The second disc contains a previously unissued alternate mix of " Forever Changes " ( according to the liner notes, the original master of " Forever Changes " is missing, although the alternate mix was made from it at some point ).

The alternate mix of " Forever Changes " included in the second disc features a proto-rap by Lee on a slightly longer version of the album closer " You Set The Scene " that was edited out of the final version that was released commercially.

A Super High Material CD ( SHM-CD ) version of " Forever Changes " was released in Japan in 2009.

The version given the SHM-CD treatment was the 2001 expanded single disc release from Rhino Records featuring the original eleven songs from " Forever Changes " plus seven bonus tracks.

" Forever Changes ," with colorful, iconic cover art by Bob Pepper and Ronnie Haran's equally iconic photograph of the band on the back cover, was a commercial failure upon its release in the United States in late 1967.

Henry Hall Wilson, a student at the music camp 25 years ago and now on the President's staff as liaison representative with the House of Representatives, turned guest conductor for a Sousa march, the `` Stars and Stripes Forever ''.

In 1965 Lerner collaborated again with Burton Lane on the musical On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, which was adapted for film in 1970.

Mumy worked again with Harris on the 1998 retrospective special Lost In Space: Forever, where they reprised their roles in a scene written by Mumy ( with Harris re-writing his lines ).

Capitol / EMI's album Forever Cool ( 2007 ) features two duets with Spacey and the voice of the late Dean Martin: " Ain't That a Kick in the Head " and " King of the Road.

Vit Wagner, writing for The Toronto Star in 2001 on the re-mastered edition of " Forever Changes ," said, "( It ) might not rank with the Beach Boys ' ' Pet Sounds ' and the Beatles ' ' Revolver ' and ' Sgt.

' Forever Changes ,' originally released in 1967 and re-issued on a beautifully engineered disc that includes seven illuminating bonus tracks, freely mixes light and dark, with the melodic lyricism of ' Andmoreagain ' and ' The Good Humor Man He Sees Everything Like This ,' matched by the apocalyptic sentiments of ' A House Is Not A Motel ' and ' The Red Telephone.

' Forever Changes ' is like a horizontal slice of Los Angeles in 1967, when LA rivalled London as the centre of pop music. On this album, you can hear Tim Buckley's folk-meets-jazz, the Doors ' brooding rock with its arty leanings, Buffalo Springfield's folk / pop, early signs of LA's less mannered psychedelia and even a smidgin of the sheer pop prettiness of the likes of the Turtles and the Monkees.

Chris Hollow, writing for the Sunday Age ( Melbourne, Australia ) in 2003, said, " The music on ' Forever Changes ' is powerful, exotic, surreal, occasionally demented and suffused with the unmistakable and heady scent of 1967 California.

A psychedelic masterpiece with neither lengthy jams nor studio wizardry ... ' Forever Changes ' is an enigma wrapped in a web of contradictions ..."

In an obituary of Arthur Lee in early 2007, Kandia Crazy Horse of Vibe Magazine wrote that "' Forever Changes ' ( was ) his psychedelic masterpiece ... an exhilarating mash-up of West Side freak folk with East Side mariachi and blues.

That ’ s another reason ‘ Forever Changes ’ resonates with me, and why I ’ m grateful to Lee for producing a timeless song cycle of possibilities.
