He formally requested reinstatement as I Corps commander, but Meade refused, and Doubleday left Gettysburg on July 7 for Washington.

Meeting with Lee, Longstreet was concerned about the strength of the Union defensive position and advocated a strategic movement around the left flank of the enemy, to " secure good ground between him and his capital ," which would presumably compel the Union commander, Maj. Gen. George G. Meade, to attack defensive positions erected by the Confederates.

" Military historians Herman Hattaway and Archer Jones wrote, " Unenthusiastic about the attack, Longstreet consumed so much time in properly assembling and aligning the corps that the assault did not commence until 4 p. m. During all the time that passed, Meade continued to move in troops to bring about a more and more complete concentration ; by 6 p. m. he had achieved numerical superiority and had his left well covered.

Meade rushed the remainder of his Army to Gettysburg and skillfully deployed his forces for a defensive battle, reacting swiftly to fierce assaults on his line's left, right, and center, culminating in Lee's disastrous assault on the center, known as Pickett's Charge.

When Meade left the band, Gwen replaced him as lead singer, and No Doubt continued to develop a live following in California.

In March 1996, Meade left NASA and the military to join the Lockheed Skunk Works as the Deputy Project Manager for the X-33 vehicle.

Meade planned an attack from the Power's Hill area into the Confederate left flank, to be led by Slocum the following day, utilizing the V Corps and the XII Corps as the army's " right wing ".

When Meade ordered Slocum to send the entire XII Corps to assist the defense against Lt. Gen. James Longstreet's assault on the Union left flank on July 2, Slocum wisely recommended holding one brigade back in its position on Culp's Hill.

Subsequently, when General Red Jackson died in March, 1903, his portion of the Belle Meade estate was left to his son, William Harding Jackson ( I ) who, in turn, died just 4 months later in July, 1903 ; leaving the estate to Selene Elliston, the Catholic Church and his son, William Harding " Bill " Jackson ( II ), ( then age 2 ) -- all of which was to be administered by James B. Richardson, Executor.

The band briefly replaced Spence after his death with a member of their horn section, Alan Meade, however Meade left the band shortly thereafter.

Meade was occupied with the fierce fighting on his left flank and was scrambling to send as many reinforcements as possible.

On the afternoon of July 2 the corps was ordered by army commander George G. Meade to disengage from Culp's Hill and reinforce the Union line on its extreme left flank, near Little Round Top.

While these two attacks were going on, Maj. Gen. George G. Meade, commander of the Army of the Potomac and in temporary overall command while Grant was ill, became concerned that Lee was attempting to turn the left flank of the Union army.

On the afternoon of July 2, a massive attack by Lt. Gen. James Longstreet on the Union's left flank caused army commander Maj. Gen. George G. Meade to order Williams to transfer his entire corps to reinforce the left, in the vicinity of Little Round Top.
