** Yilgarn craton

The Darling Scarp originated as the local expression, in the Perth area, of the extensive Darling Fault, a major and ancient geological discontinuity separating the Archaean Yilgarn Craton in the east from the younger Pinjarra Orogen and overlying Phanerozoic Perth Basin to the west.

The Archaean granites and gneisses of the Yilgarn Craton form the high ground of the Perth Hills and can be observed in road cuts, with good examples in the Mundaring Weir area.

The scarp forms a divide between the hypersaline groundwaters typical of the Yilgarn Craton basement from the fresh ground waters of the Perth Basin.

Due to the extraordinary age of the soils in the basin ( which is on the extremely ancient Yilgarn Craton ), the rooting density of native flora is very high and its average specific discharge probably the lowest of any basin of comparable size in the world.

Pentlandite is also the principal ore mineral won from Kambalda type komatiitic nickel ore deposits, the type examples of which are in the Yilgarn Craton of Western Australia.

The bedrock at the site is weathered Archaean granite of the Yilgarn Craton.

The prominent ring-like topographic feature, easily seen in satellite images, lies on the boundary between the Palaeoproterozoic Earaheedy Basin and the Archaean Yilgarn Craton.

Yarrabubba crater refers to an impact structure ( or astrobleme ), the eroded remnant of a former impact crater, situated in the northern Yilgarn Craton between the towns of Sandstone and Meekatharra, central Western Australia.

The Yilgarn Craton ( present-day Western Australia ) contains zircon crystals in its crust that date back to 4. 4 Ga.

The accretion events are recorded in the greenstone belts of the Yilgarn Craton as metamorphosed basalt belts and granitic domes accreted around the high grade metamorphic core of the Western Gneiss Terrane, which includes elements of up to 3. 2 Ga in age and some older portions, for example the Narryer Gneiss Terrane.

Archaean greenstones are found in the Slave craton, northern Canada, Pilbara craton and Yilgarn Craton, Western Australia, Gawler Craton in South Australia, and in the Wyoming Craton in the US.

Proterozoic greenstones occur sandwiched between the Pilbara and Yilgarn cratons in Australia, and adjoining the Gawler Craton and within the extensive Proterozoic mobile belts of Australia, within West Africa, throughout the metamorphic complexes surrounding the Archaean core of Madagascar ; the eastern United States, northern Canada and northern Scandinavia.
