To support his assertion, he relates a story ( excerpted by John of Damascus ) that a pagan commissioned to paint an image of Jesus used the " Zeus " form instead of the " Semitic " form, and that as punishment his hands withered.

John of Damascus also regarded the brazen serpent as an icon.

According to John of Damascus, anyone who tries to destroy icons " is the enemy of Christ, the Holy Mother of God and the saints, and is the defender of the Devil and his demons.

The chief theological opponents of iconoclasm were the monks Mansur ( John of Damascus ), who, living in Muslim territory as advisor to the Caliph of Damascus, was far enough away from the Byzantine emperor to evade retribution, and Theodore the Studite, abbot of the Stoudios monastery in Constantinople.

The Greek legend of " Barlaam and Ioasaph " is sometimes attributed to the 7th century John of Damascus, but actually it was transcribed by the Georgian monk Euthymius in the 11th century.

A brief intervention in 1137 – 1138 by the Byzantine emperor John II Comnenus, who wished to assert imperial suzerainty over all the crusader states, did nothing to stop the threat of Zengi ; in 1139 Damascus and Jerusalem recognized the severity of the threat to both states, and an alliance was concluded which halted Zengi's advance.

Al-Kamil retreated to the nearby fortress of al-Mansurah, but the crusaders remained in Damietta throughout 1219 and 1220, awaiting the arrival of Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II, while King John returned to Acre briefly to defend against al-Mu ' azzam, who was raiding the kingdom from Damascus in John's absence.

John made peace with Damascus and attempted to regain Ascalon ; the Egyptians, now ruled by the Mamluk sultanate, besieged Jaffa in 1256 in response.

One of the earliest examples of these kinds of conversions was in Damascus, Syria, where in 705 Umayyad caliph Al-Walid I bought the church of St. John from the Christians and had it rebuilt as a mosque in exchange for building a number of new churches for the Christians in Damascus.

The emphasis on the salvific nature of the Resurrection continued in Christian theology in the next centuries, e. g., in the 8th century Saint John of Damascus wrote that: "... When he had freed those who were bound from the beginning of time, Christ returned again from among the dead, having opened for us the way to resurrection " and Christian iconography of the ensuing years represented that concept.

Under John Tzimiskes Syria was completely overrun ; Damascus itself, the former capital of the Islamic world, was captured, although only for a brief period.
