To this end, manager Jim Dickson instigated a loose session where the band recorded several honky tonk staples from their live act, contemporary pop covers in a countrified vein (" To Love Somebody ", " Lodi ", " I Shall Be Released ", " Honky Tonk Women "), and Larry Williams ' " Bony Moronie ".

Janis Joplin charted five singles, and other popular songs from her four-year career include " Down On Me ", " Bye, Bye Baby ", " Coo Coo ", " Summertime ", " Piece of My Heart ", " Turtle Blues ", " Ball ' n ' Chain ", " Try ( Just A Little Bit Harder )", " Maybe ", " To Love Somebody ", " Kozmic Blues ", " Work Me, Lord ", " Move Over ", " Cry Baby ", " A Woman Left Lonely ", " Get It While You Can ", " My Baby ", " Trust Me ", " Mercedes Benz ", " One Night Stand ", " Raise Your Hand " and her only number one hit, " Me and Bobby McGee ".

Key recordings included Jefferson Airplane's Surrealistic Pillow, the first album to come out of San Francisco during this era, which sold well enough to bring the city's music scene to the attention of the record industry: from it they took two of the earliest psychedelic hit singles: " White Rabbit " ( 1967 ) and " Somebody to Love " ( 1967 ).

The major hit on the album was " Somebody to Love ", a gospel-inspired song in which Mercury, May, and Taylor multi-tracked their voices to create a 100-voice gospel choir.

A live version of " Somebody to Love " by George Michael and a live version of " The Show Must Go On " with Elton John were also featured in the album.

On 25 and 26 April, May and Taylor appeared on the eleventh series of American Idol at the Nokia Theatre, Los Angeles, performing a Queen medley with the six finalists on the first show, and the following day performed " Somebody to Love " with the ' Queen Extravaganza ' band.

The Great Society had recorded an early version of " Somebody to Love " ( under the title " Someone to Love ") as the B-side of their only single, " Free Advice ", produced by Sylvester Stewart ( soon to become famous as Sly Stone ).

In addition to the group's two best-known tracks, " White Rabbit " and " Somebody to Love ", the album featured " My Best Friend " by former drummer Skip Spence, Balin's driving " Plastic Fantastic Lover ," and the atmospheric Balin-Kantner ballad " Today ".

Both " Somebody to Love " and " White Rabbit " became major US hits, the former reaching No. 5 and the latter No. 8 on the Billboard singles chart.

The Airplane's famous appearance on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour performing " White Rabbit " and " Somebody to Love " was videotaped in color and augmented by developments in video techniques.

While both " White Rabbit " and " Somebody To Love " were US Top 10 hits, " The Ballad of You and Me and Pooneil ", peaked at No. 43 and " Watch Her Ride " stalled at No. 61, though both were listed as being in the top forty in Cash Box.

It included the hit singles " If You Love Somebody Set Them Free ", ( backed with the non-LP song " Another Day ") " Fortress Around Your Heart ", " Love Is the Seventh Wave ", and " Russians ", the last of which was based on a theme from the Lieutenant Kijé Suite.

In September 1985, Sting performed " If You Love Somebody Set Them Free " at the 1985 MTV Video Music Awards at the Radio City Music Hall in New York.

The CD and DVD were to be entitled On such a night and was intended to feature re-workings of Sting favourites such as " Roxanne " and " If You Love Somebody Set Them Free.

's second single, also produced by Captain Mikey, an extended cover version of The Zombies ' non-chart song " I Love You ", backed by " Somebody Tell Me My Name ".

By mid-April, " Dixie Fried ", " Put Your Cat Clothes On ", " Right String, Wrong Yo-Yo ", " You Can't Make Love to Somebody ", " Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby ", and " That Don't Move Me " had been recorded.
