He first settled in Egypt, hearing the lectures of Didymus, the Origenistic head of the catechetical school at Alexandria, and also cultivating friendly relations with Macarius the elder and other ascetics in the desert.

Among the notable Desert Fathers and Mothers with sayings in the book, in addition to Anthony, were Abba Arsenius, Abba Poemen, Abba Macarius of Egypt, Abba Moses the Black, and Amma Syncletica of Alexandria.

Pope Macarius I of Alexandria was the Coptic Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of St. Mark from 933 to 953.
