Robert was probably son of Robert III of Worms ( b. 800 ) and grandson of Robert of Hesbaye ( b. 770 ).

Juan Carlos I, current King of Spain, is descended directly from Robert of Hesbaye ( 770-807 ) through the male line, thus making the Spanish Royal Line the second longest lived in the world, after the Japanese.

While very little is known about the beginnings of the Robertian family, historians have been able to adduce that the family of nobles had its origins in Hesbaye or perhaps from the family of Chrodegang of Metz or he is son of Robert III of Worms.

Robert of Hesbaye and Cancor, founder of the Lorsch Abbey were probably his brothers.
