De motu corporum in gyrum ( Latin )( translated as " On the motion of bodies in an orbit ") is the ( presumed ) title of a manuscript by Isaac Newton sent to Edmond Halley in November 1684.

The opening sections of the ' Principia ' contain, in revised and extended form, nearly all of the content of Newton's 1684 tract ' De motu ...' ( see article De motu corporum in gyrum which summarises the topics and indicates where they reappear in the ' Principia ').

Newton's tract ' De motu ...', which he sent to Halley in late 1684, derived what are now known as the three laws of Kepler, assuming an inverse square law of force, and generalized the result to conic sections.

Other evidence also shows Newton's absorption in the Principia: Newton for years kept up a regular programme of chemical or alchemical experiments, and he normally kept dated notes of them, but for a period from May 1684 to April 1686, Newton's chemical notebooks have no entries at all.

Publication of Newton's main treatises took many years, whereas Leibniz published first ( Nova methodus, 1684 ) and the whole subject was subsequently marred by a priority dispute between the two inventors of calculus.

* In 1684, Christopher Wren announced that he would give a book worth 40 shillings ( equivalent to about £ in present-day terms ) to anyone who could deduce Kepler's laws from the inverse-square law.

He executed the laws enforcing religious conformity with severity, and filled the parish churches, but resisted the excessive measures of tyranny prescribed by the English government ; and in consequence of an intrigue of the Duke of Queensberry and Lord Perth, who gained the duchess of Portsmouth with a present of £ 27, 000, he was dismissed in 1684.

When in 1684 Henry Viscount St John was convicted of killing Sir William Estcourt in a brawl, and Charles II used the royal prerogative for his pardon, Bishop Barlow published an elaborate tract, 1684-5, in support of the regal power to dispense with the penal laws.

With the aid of his laws of motion, he proved in 1684 that any planet that is attracted to a fixed center sweeps out equal areas in equal intervals of time.

After this, he retired from the stage for the final time and died at his home in Paris in 1684.
