The work was composed after Diabelli, a well known music publisher and composer, in the early part of 1819 sent a waltz of his creation to all the important composers of the Austrian Empire, including Franz Schubert, Carl Czerny, Johann Nepomuk Hummel, and the Archduke Rudolph, asking each of them to write a variation on it.

Franz von Suppé's parents named him Francesco Ezechiele Ermenegildo Cavaliere di Suppé-Demelli when he was born on April 18, 1819, in Split, Dalmatia, Austrian Empire.

It was first recorded by Pierre Méchain in 1786, but it was not recognized as a periodic comet until 1819 when its orbit was computed by Johann Franz Encke ; like Halley's Comet, it is unusual in being named after the calculator of its orbit rather than its discoverer.

Franz von Suppé ( 1819 – 1895 ) is remembered mainly for his overtures.

Based on the earlier Handwörterbuch der griechischen Sprache by the German lexicographer Franz Passow ( first published in 1819, fourth edition 1831 ), which in turn was based on Johann Gottlob Schneider's Kritisches griechisch-deutsches Handwörterbuch, it has served as the basis for all later lexicographical work on the ancient Greek language, such as the ongoing Greek – Spanish dictionary project Diccionario Griego – Español ( DGE ).

Alfred Ritter von Arneth ( July 10, 1819 – July 30, 1897 ), Austrian historian, born at Vienna, was the son of Joseph Calasanza von Arneth ( 1791-1863 ), a well-known historian and archaeologist, who wrote a history of the Austrian Empire ( Vienna, 1827 ) and several works on numismatics and brother of Doctor Franz Hektor von Arneth ( 1818-1907 ).

Franz Wilhelm Abt ( 22 December 1819 – 31 March 1885 ) was a German composer and choral conductor.

The waltz with its modern hold took root in England in about 1812 ; in 1819 Carl Maria von Weber wrote Invitation to the Dance, which marked the adoption of the waltz form into the sphere of absolute music.

Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher, Fürst von Wahlstatt (; December 16, 1742 – September 12, 1819 ), Graf ( Count ), later elevated to Fürst ( Prince ) von Wahlstatt, was a Prussian Generalfeldmarschall ( field marshal ) who led his army against Napoleon I at the Battle of the Nations at Leipzig in 1813 and at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 with the Duke of Wellington.
