In the resulting Battle of Spion Kop, British troops captured the summit by surprise during the early hours of 24 January 1900, but as the early morning fog lifted they realised too late that they were overlooked by Boer gun emplacements on the surrounding hills.

On 13 March 1900, following the Battle of Paardeberg, British forces captured the city and built a concentration camp nearby to house Boer women and children.

During the Boxer Rebellion, Imperial Chinese forces deployed a weapon called " electric mines " on June 15, at the Peiho river before the Battle of Dagu Forts ( 1900 ), to prevent the western Eight-Nation Alliance from sending ships to attack.

Kitchener won fame in 1898 for winning the Battle of Omdurman and securing control of the Sudan, after which he was given the title " Lord Kitchener of Khartoum "; as Chief of Staff ( 1900 – 02 ) in the Second Boer War he played a key role in Lord Roberts ' conquest of the Boer Republics, then succeeded Roberts as commander-in-chief – by which time Boer forces had taken to guerrilla fighting and British forces imprisoned Boer civilians in concentration camps.

Officially holding the title of chief of staff, he was in practice a second-in-command, and commanded a much-criticised frontal assault at the Battle of Paardeberg in February 1900.

Manila was named around 1900, during the time of the Spanish American War and its origin is related to the Battle of Manila Bay.
