Mordecai Richler, CC ( January 27, 1931 – July 3, 2001 ) was a Canadian author, screenwriter and essayist.

In 1931, he was ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary, where he first met and studied with Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan, the founder of Reconstructionist Judaism.

The son of a Jewish scrap yard dealer, Richler was born in 1931 and raised on St. Urbain Street in the Mile End area of Montreal.

English and British statutes are part of Canadian law because of the Colonial Laws Validity Act, 1865, section 129 of the Constitution Act, 1867, and the Statute of Westminster 1931.
