The Columbus Day Storm of 1962 ( also known as the Big Blow, and originally as Typhoon Freda ) was an extratropical cyclone that struck the Pacific Northwest coast of the United States on October 12, 1962.
The remnants of Super Typhoon Nanmadol continued to rapidly move to the east-northeast and northeast and ultimately merged with another LOW, forming a powerful extratropical cyclone which brought strong winds and led to unseasonably warm temperatures to Japan.
Favorable conditions allow the low to strengthen into a tropical depression on September 17, and continue to intensify into a Typhoon early on September 20. Shanshan reached peak intensity on September 21 as a category 4 super typhoon. Due to the Fujiwhara effect, Shanshan was weakened by a extratropical cyclone located south of Kamchatka Krai, and Shanshan merged and collapsed into a single Extratropical cyclone.
Typhoon Gloria became fully extratropical on November 16, having weakened back into a tropical storm.
