1967 and Aldene
In the aftermath of the Conrail merger New Jersey allowed several former CNJ lines shed by Conrail to be abandoned, most notably much of its four-track main line east of Aldene, NJ ( as part of the Aldene Plan starting in 1967 ) and the impressive Newark Bay Bridge, spanning from Elizabethport to Bayone, which was removed in the early 1980s.
Passenger service along the line ended in 1967 with the advent of the Aldene Plan when the Bay Head trains ( the line's only remaining commuter service ) were moved to Newark Penn Station.
At the end of April 1967 the Aldene Connection opened to the Lehigh Valley Railroad, and trains were re-routed to Newark Penn Station on the Northeast Corridor via Hunter Connection.
These stations have closed since the Aldene Plan was implemented in 1967.
