The original Only Fools and Horses line-up of ( l-r ) Grandad ( Lennard Pearce ), Del Boy ( David Jason ) and Rodney ( Nicholas Lyndhurst ) lasted from 1981 – 1984.
The character took over the role of senior citizen member of the irrepressible Trotter family from Lennard Pearce who played Grandad, after Pearce died suddenly and unexpectedly in December 1984.

Pearce died in 1984 whilst filming the series four episode " Hole in One " ( several scenes were subsequently re-shot with Buster Merryfield ) and Sullivan thus wrote a new episode, " Strained Relations ", which featured Grandad's funeral.
After nine years and 86 caps ( plus one goal-scored in a World Cup qualifier against Finland in 1984 ) Sansom's international career was at an end, months before his 30th birthday, despite being briefly recalled as a back-up in 1989 when Pearce was injured, though he did not play.
Pearce also appeared in an episode of Minder named " The Balance of Power ", which was shown on Halloween in 1984, along with playing Mr Coles in three episodes of Shroud for a Nightingale in March 1984.
However, Pearce suffered a second heart attack, and died instantly, on the night of 15 December 1984.
