After listening to Verdi's Requiem, the German, prolific and eloquent in his comments on some other composers, stated, " It would be best not to say anything.

It was the premiere of A German Requiem, his largest choral work, in Bremen, in 1868, that confirmed Brahms's European reputation and led many to accept that he had conquered Beethoven and the symphony.

His large choral work A German Requiem is not a setting of the liturgical Missa pro defunctis but a setting of texts which Brahms selected from the Lutheran Bible.

A German Requiem was partially inspired by his mother's death in 1865 ( at which time he composed a funeral march that was to become the basis of Part Two, Denn alles Fleisch ), but it also incorporates material from a symphony which he started in 1854 but abandoned following Schumann's suicide attempt.

When asked by conductor Karl Reinthaler to add additional sectarian text to his German Requiem, Brahms responded, " As far as the text is concerned, I confess that I would gladly omit even the word German and instead use Human ; also with my best knowledge and will I would dispense with passages like John 3: 16.

After the Requiem Mass and service, his remains were brought upstream to Rhöndorf on the Rhine aboard Kondor, with Seeadler and Sperber as escorts, three Jaguar class fast attack craft of the German Navy, " past the thousands who stood in silence on both banks of the river ".

Occupied Vienna is also colourfully depicted in the Philip Kerr novel, " A German Requiem.

In February 2011 Pletnev conducted Staatskapelle Dresden in A German Requiem by Brahms in memoriam of the firestorm on Dresden in the Semperoper.

His sombre but striking Requiem, setting a multi-lingual text ( English, French, German and Latin ) based on works by Francisco Tanzer, was given its first performance in Hamburg in 1980.

Otto Klemperer became Music Director in 1933, part of the large group of German emigrants fleeing Nazi Germany.

Otto Klemperer ( 14 May 18856 July 1973 ) was a German conductor and composer.

The two men became friends, and Klemperer became conductor at the German Opera in Prague in 1907 on Mahler's recommendation.

In 1954 Klemperer again returned to Europe, and acquired a German passport.

Klemperer, conscious that he would be playing the role of a German officer during the Nazi regime, agreed to the part only on the condition that Klink would be portrayed as a fool who never succeeded.

Klemperer later starred in Wake Me When The War Is Over in 1969 playing the role of a German Major, Erich Mueller alongside Eva Gabor ( Green Acres ).

Many German musicians associated with the opera went into exile, including the conductors Kurt Adler, Otto Klemperer and Fritz Busch.

Ironically, after the burning of the Reichstag in 1933, the German seat of the government was moved to the Krolloper, the state opera house in Berlin which, under the adventurous directorship of Otto Klemperer, had seen the premieres of many innovative works of the 1920s, including Hindemith's Neues vom Tage.
