* 1B — Single: hits on which the batter reaches first base safely without the contribution of a fielding error.

* 2B — Double: hits on which the batter reaches second base safely without the contribution of a fielding error.

* 3B — Triple: hits on which the batter reaches third base safely without the contribution of a fielding error.

* BABIP — Batting average on balls in play: frequency at which a batter reaches a base after putting the ball in the field of play.

* The batter reaches first base on a hit

* The batter reaches first base on an error

* A batter reaches first base on a passed ball ( but not a wild pitch ) and subsequently scores by any means.

* A batter reaches base on a fielder's choice which removes a baserunner who has reached base safely on an error or has remained on base as the result of an error, reaching first base on a passed ball on a called or swinging third strike, or remained on base on an error on a fielders ' choice play that should have retired him, and subsequently scores.

In the first two cases above, " on an error " includes situations where the batter makes a clean hit ( or walks, is hit by pitch, reaches base on a fielder's choice in which no out is made, or reaches base on a wild pitch on a called or swinging third strike ), but should have been out earlier in his at bat on a foul fly ball which was dropped by a fielder for an error.

In baseball statistics, a hit ( denoted by H ), also called a base hit, is credited to a batter when the batter safely reaches first base after hitting the ball into fair territory, without the benefit of an error or a fielder's choice.

To achieve a hit, the batter must reach first base before any fielder can either tag him with the ball, throw to another player protecting the base before the batter reaches it, or tag first base while carrying the ball.

:( 3 ) the batter reaches first base safely on a fair ball that takes an unnatural bounce so that a fielder cannot handle it with ordinary effort, or that touches the pitcher's plate or any base ( including home plate ) before being touched by a fielder and bounces so that a fielder cannot handle the ball with ordinary effort ;

:( 4 ) the batter reaches first base safely on a fair ball that has not been touched by a fielder and that is in fair territory when the ball reaches the outfield, unless in the scorer's judgment the ball could have been handled with ordinary effort ;

In baseball statistics, on-base percentage ( OBP ; sometimes referred to as on-base average / OBA, as the statistic is rarely presented as a true percentage ) is a measure of how often a batter reaches base for any reason other than a fielding error, fielder's choice, dropped / uncaught third strike, fielder's obstruction, or catcher's interference ( the latter two are ignored as either times-on-base ( TOB ) or plate appearances in calculating OBP ).

In a perfect game, no batter reaches any base during the course of the game.

There is also the " inside-the-park " home run, increasingly rare in modern baseball, where the batter reaches home safely while the baseball is in play on the field.

Catcher must catch the third strike or batter may attempt to run to first base.

* BB — Base on balls ( also called a " walk "): times pitching four balls, allowing the batter to take first base

* HB — Hit batsman: times hit a batter with pitch, allowing runner to advance to first base

If the batter gets a base hit, which would have scored the runner anyway, the run now becomes earned.

Neither the use of a pinch-runner to replace a baserunner who represents an unearned run nor the use of a pinch-hitter to continue the turn at bat of a batter who would be out except for an error transforms a run scored by such a person or his successors on base from an unearned run to an earned run.

A base on balls ( BB ) is credited to a batter and against a pitcher in baseball statistics when a batter receives four pitches that the umpire calls balls.

Receiving a base on balls does not count as a hit or an at bat for a batter but does count as a time on base and a plate appearance.

A hit by pitch is not counted statistically as a walk, though the effect is mostly the same, with the batter receiving a free pass to first base.

* HR — Home runs: hits on which the batter successfully touched all four bases, without the contribution of a fielding error.

* RBI — Run batted in: number of runners who score due to a batters ' action, except when batter grounded into double play or reached on an error

* FPOM — First Pitch Outs Made: Number of outs earned where the batter ground or flies out on the first pitch.

In this case, the batter will come to bat again in the next inning, though he now has no balls or strikes on him.

* A batter or runner advances one or more bases on an error or passed ball and scores on a play that would otherwise not have provided the opportunity to score.

* The batter is put out because an outfielder ( or an infielder running in the outfield, or foul territory ) catches the ball on the fly ( alternatively if the batter would have been out if not for an error or if the outfielder drops the ball and another runner is put out ).

Note that, although rarely occurring, if a runner tags and advances from second base ( or, theoretically, from first base ) all the way to home and scores ( without an intervening error ) the batter is credited with a sacrifice fly.

1904 saw an attempt to reduce the already wordy slew of rules governing stolen bases, with the stolen base now credited when "... the advances a base unaided by a base hit, a put out, ( or ) a fielding or batter error.

Likewise, the pitcher is recorded as having given up a hit, a run for each runner that scores including the batter, and an earned run each for the batter and for all baserunners who did not initially reach base on error, except that the runs scored by any runners who reached base while facing an earlier pitcher are charged to that pitcher.

Haddix carried a perfect game through an unprecedented 12 innings against the Milwaukee Braves, only to have it ruined when an error by third baseman Don Hoak allowed Felix Mantilla, the leadoff batter in the bottom of the 13th inning, to reach base.

Run batted in or RBI is a statistic used in baseball and softball to credit a batter when the outcome of his at-bat results in a run being scored, except in certain situations such as when an error is made on the play.

When a home run is scored, the batter is also credited with a hit and a run scored, and an RBI for each runner that scores, including himself.
