The full version of the song from Melbourne Punch, the fourth verse of which is pasted onto the urn

Several editions featuring Newton's first three stanzas and the verse previously included by Harriet Beecher Stowe in Uncle Tom's Cabin were published by Excell between 1900 and 1910, and his version of " Amazing Grace " became the standard form of the song in American churches.

Bruce Hindmarsh suggests that the secular popularity of " Amazing Grace " is due to the absence of any mention of God in the lyrics until the fourth verse ( by Excell's version, the fourth verse begins " When we've been there ten thousand years "), and that the song represents the ability of humanity to transform itself instead of a transformation taking place at the hands of God.

This verse is also featured in William Billing's popular Sacred Harp song " David's Lamentation ", first published in 1778.

Finally, the Quadra is a song where the same verse is repeated four times, either three singer verses followed by one chorus response, or one verse and one response.

Towards the end of the year, Bowie performed the song for Marc Bolan's television show Marc, and again two days later for Bing Crosby's televised Christmas special, when he joined Crosby in " Peace on Earth / Little Drummer Boy ", a version of " The Little Drummer Boy " with a new, contrapuntal verse.

Songwriter Mike Brady, of " Up There Cazaly " fame, penned an updated version of the song in 1999 complete with a new verse arrangement, but it was not well received.

* George Harrison's 1975 song " This Guitar ( Can't Keep from Crying )", a lyrical sequel to his Beatles track " While My Guitar Gently Weeps ", references the magazine in its second verse: " Learned to get up when I fall / Can even climb Rolling Stone walls ".
