He was appointed Chancellor of the University of Aberdeen in 1827 and was President of the Society of Antiquaries of London.

Scotland advanced markedly in educational terms during the fifteenth century with the founding of the University of St Andrews in 1413, the University of Glasgow in 1450 and the University of Aberdeen in 1495, and with the passing of the Education Act 1496, which decreed that all sons of barons and freeholders of substance should attend grammar schools.

He appointed the Duke of Richmond, a wealthy landowner who was both Chancellor of Aberdeen University and Lord Lieutenant of Banff.

In 1898 he received his medical degree from University of Aberdeen and went to work for a year at the University of Leipzig.

In 1928 he returned to the University of Aberdeen as Regius Professor of Physiology, where he remained until his death in 1935.

In 1522 he published the Vitae Episcoporum Murthlacensium et Aberdonensium ( Lives of the Bishops of Murthlack and Aberdeen ) and in 1527 the Historia Gentis Scotorum ( History of the Scottish People ) to the accession of James III of Scotland.

He was curator of the museum of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh from 1831, resigning in 1841 to become Professor of Natural History at Marischal College, Aberdeen.
