From there Alaric escaped with difficulty, and not without some suspicion of connivance by Stilicho, who supposedly had again received orders to depart.

Nonetheless, the written sources do not mention damages wrought by fire, save the Gardens of Sallust, which were situated close to the gate by which the Goths had made their entrance ; nor is there any reason to attribute any extensive destruction of the buildings of the city to Alaric and his followers.

Alaric was forced by his magnates to meet Clovis in the Battle of Vouillé ( Summer 507 ) near Poitiers ; there the Goths were defeated and Alaric slain, according to Gregory of Tours, by Clovis himself.

The kings after Alaric II favoured Narbonne as a capital, but twice ( 611 and 531 ) were defeated and forced back to Barcelona by the Franks before Theudis moved the capital there permanently.

In 410 Alaric took Rome by starvation, sacked it for three days ( there was relatively little destruction, and in some Christian holy places Alaric's men even refrained from wanton wrecking and rape ), and invited its remaining barbarian slaves to join him, which many did.

Alaric lifted his blockade after proclaiming Attalus as Western Emperor.

Having abandoned a plan to occupy Sicily and North Africa after the destruction of his fleet in a storm, Alaric died as the Visigoths were marching northward.

The chief authorities on the career of Alaric are: the historian Orosius and the poet Claudian, both contemporary, neither disinterested ; Zosimus, a historian who lived probably about half a century after Alaric's death ; and Jordanes, a Goth who wrote the history of his nation in 551, basing his work on The Trojan War.

Then when the Franks attacked the Burgundians in the decade after 500, Alaric assisted the ruling house, and according to Wolfram the victorious Burgundian king Gundobad ceded Avignon to Alaric.

In early 408, Stilicho attempted to strengthen his position at court by marrying his second daughter, Thermantia, to Honorius after the death of the empress Maria in 407 Another invasion by Alaric was prevented in 408 by Stilicho when he forced the Roman Senate to pay 4, 000 pounds of gold to persuade the Goths to leave Italy.

Priscus reports that superstitious fear of the fate of Alaric — who died shortly after sacking Rome in 410 — gave him pause.

Less than twenty years after the last vestiges of Paganism were crushed with great severity by the emperor Theodosius I Rome was seized by Alaric in 410.

In the last years of Theodosius ' reign, one of the emerging leaders of the Goths, named Alaric, participated in Theodosius ' campaign against Eugenius in 394, only to resume his rebellious behavior against Theodosius ' son and eastern successor, Arcadius, shortly after Theodosius ' death.

Finally, after the western general Stilicho was executed by Honorius in 408 and the Roman legions massacred the families of 30, 000 barbarian soldiers serving in the Roman army, Alaric declared war.

Jordanes says that Attila was afraid of sharing the fate of the Visigothic king Alaric, who died shortly after sacking Rome in 410.

During the decline of the Western Roman Empire, Heruls, Vandals, Alaric and his Visigoths, as well as the Huns laid waste to the area, but the city recovered after the Ostrogoth conquest in 489 AD, before passing to Byzantine rule soon after.

Taking the advice of Priscus Attalus — the former emperor whom Alaric had set up at Rome in opposition to Honorius at Ravenna, and who had remained with the Visigoths after he'd been deposed — Ataulf led his followers out of Italy.

Searle asserts that there is no essential difference between the role the computer plays in the first case and the role he plays in the latter.

Searle illustrates the evolution of social facts from brute facts by the constitutive rule: X counts as Y in C. " The Y terms has to assign a new status that the object does not already have just in virtue of satisfying the Y term ; and there has to be collective agreement, or at least acceptance, both in the imposition of that status on the stuff referred to by the X term and about the function that goes with that status.

It is true that language is not a " brute fact ," that it is an institutional fact, a human convention, a metaphysical reality ( that happens to be physically uttered ), but Searle points out that there are language-independent thoughts " noninstitutional, primitive, biological inclinations and cognitions not requiring any linguistic devices ," and that there are many " brute facts " amongst both humans and animals that are truths that should not be altered in the social constructs because language does not truly constitute them, despite the attempt to institute them for any group's gain: money and property are language dependent, but desires ( thirst, hunger ) and emotions ( fear, rage ) are not.

Finally, against the strong theory and for the weak theory, Searle insists, " it could not be the case, as some have maintained, that all facts are institutional social facts, that there are no brute facts, because the structure of institutional facts reveals that they are logically dependent on brute facts.

The second, which Searle now prefers but is less well known, is his ' syntax is not physics ' argument — nothing in the world is intrinsically a computer program except as applied, described or interpreted by an observer, so either everything can be described as a computer and trivially a brain can but then this does not explain any specific mental processes, or there is nothing intrinsic in a brain that makes it a computer ( program ).

Searle recalled, " I desperately wanted to put down what was happening, because I thought if by any chance there was a record, even if I died, someone might find it and know what went on.
