Little more than a year after her birth, Maria Theresa was joined by a sister, Archduchess Maria Anna, and another one, named Maria Amalia, was born in 1724.

The portraits of the imperial family show that Maria Theresa resembled Empress Elisabeth Christine and Archduchess Maria Anna.

Born in Florence, Italy at the Palazzo Pitti on 26 April 1575, Marie was the sixth daughter of Francesco I de ' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, and Joanna, Archduchess of Austria, daughter of Ferdinand I, Holy Roman Emperor, and Anna of Bohemia and Hungary.

She proposed to Charles VI, Holy Roman Emperor, that the Infante Charles marry the 8 year old Archduchess Maria Theresa and that her second surviving son, the Infante Philip, marry the 7 year old Archduchess Maria Anna.

In October 1708 he married his maternal first cousin Archduchess & Princess Imperial Maria Anna of Austria, Princess Royal of Hungary and Bohemia ( 1683 – 1754 ), daughter of Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor and his third wife, Eleonore Magdalena of the Palatinate-Neuburg, thus strengthening the alliance with Austria.

John married Archduchess Maria Anna of Austria, daughter of Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor, his first cousin, in 1708.

On 20 February 1631 Ferdinand III married his first wife Archduchess Maria Anna of Austria.

On 29 November 1879 at the Basilica of Atocha in Madrid, Alfonso married a much more distant relative, Maria Christina of Austria, daughter of Archduke Karl Ferdinand of Austria and of his wife Archduchess Elisabeth of Austria.
