BPI was established on August 1, 1851 as the El Banco Español Filipino de Isabel II ( Spanish-Filipino Bank of Isabel II ), named after the queen of Spain, Isabella II, the daughter of former king Ferdinand VII.

Bank of the Philippine Islands ( Spanish: Banco de las Islas Filipinas, commonly known as BPI ; ) is the oldest bank in the Philippines still in operation and is the country's third largest bank in terms of assets, the country's largest bank in terms of market capitalization, and the country's most profitable bank.

BPI also pioneered rural banking in the Philippines, as its countryside banking operations preceded that of many other banks ' rural banking operations by many years.

Following World War II, BPI was actively involved in the post-war reconstruction of the Philippines.

In 1949, with the establishment of the Central Bank of the Philippines ( now the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas ), BPI ( and other banks issuing Philippine currency ) lost the right to issue Philippine pesos, a right it had since the Spanish colonial era and ( with competition from other banks ) during the American colonial period.

BancNet was founded on July 17, 1990 as the Philippines ' second ATM consortium when the ATMs of eight banks, PCI Bank ( now Banco de Oro ), Security Bank, Chinabank, RCBC, Allied Bank, Metrobank, International Corporate Bank ( now part of UnionBank ), and Citytrust Savings Bank ( now part of BPI ), formed BancNet.

MegaLink was formed in September 1989 by Equitable Banking Corporation ( now merged with BDO ), Far East Bank and Trust Company ( now part of BPI ), Philippine National Bank, and United Coconut Planters Bank, MegaLink, with its fundamental belief in universal sharing, became the first operational shared ATM network in the Philippines.

The Tin Drum album itself peaked just outside the UK Top 10, and was the band's first record to be certified by the BPI, being awarded a Silver disc within a month of release, and reaching Gold status within four months.

Expressnet was founded on February 14, 1986, when the ATMs of Bank of the Philippine Islands ( BPI ) and its subsidiary, BPI Family Savings Bank, the founders of Expressnet, were connected for the first time.

It is the second-largest ATM network in terms of number of ATMs ( largely due to the vast nationwide presence of BPI Express Teller ATMs ) and the smallest in terms of customers and number of member banks.

c-ANCA ( atypical ) is present in 80 % of cystic fibrosis ( with BPI as the target antigen ) and also in inflammatory bowel disease, primary sclerosing cholangitis and rheumatoid arthritis ( with antibodies to multiple antigenic targets ).

In 2006 they released " a more elaborate and meandering " album, A Matter of Life and Death, which received, along with their two previous studio releases, a gold certification by the BPI.

In 1969, Ayala Corporation, which had been affiliated with BPI since its establishment in 1851, became the dominant shareholder of BPI and eventually made BPI into the flagship of Ayala's financial entities.

Starting in the 1970s, BPI has been involved with many mergers and acquisitions.

BPI does not compete with its two banking partners: BPI Family Savings Bank and BPI Direct Savings Bank.
