He constructed an alliance against Philip, including Baldwin IX of Flanders, Renaud, Count of Boulogne, and his father-in-law King Sancho VI of Navarre, who raided Philip's lands from the south.

Another concern was the death of Count Baldwin VI of Flanders, who died in July 1070.

Baldwin VI, Count of Flanders ( reigned 1067 – 1070 ) was effectively succeeded by his brother Robert I ( reigned 1071 – 1093 ), rather than his own sons.

Baldwin deferred to King Louis VI of France to recommend a Frankish vassel for his daughter's hand.

By deferring to France, Baldwin II was not submitting Jerusalem to the suzerainty of France, rather was placing the moral guardianship of the Outremer with the West for its survival, reminding Louis VI that the Outremer was, to some extent, Frankish lands.

Baldwin I ( July 1172 – ), the first emperor of the Latin Empire of Constantinople, as Baldwin IX Count of Flanders and as Baldwin VI Count of Hainaut, was one of the most prominent leaders of the Fourth Crusade, which resulted in the capture of Constantinople, the conquest of the greater part of the Byzantine Empire ( then called the " Empire of Romania " by westerners ), and the foundation of the Latin Empire, also known as Romania ( not to be confused with the modern state Romania ).

Robert of Courtenay ( died 1228 ), emperor of the Latin Empire, or of Constantinople, was a younger son of the emperor Peter II of Courtenay, and a descendant of the French king, Louis VI, while his mother Yolanda of Flanders was a sister of Baldwin and Henry of Flanders, the first and second emperors of the Latin Empire.

She was the eldest daughter of Baldwin IX of Flanders, who was also ( as Baldwin VI ) count of Hainaut as well as Emperor of Constantinople.

They had five or six children together, including Edward the Elder, who succeeded his father as king, Æthelflæd, who would become Queen of Mercia in her own right, and Ælfthryth who married Baldwin II the Count of Flanders.

Following the tragedy of the horrific sacking of the city, the conquerors declared a new " Empire of Romania ," known to historians as the Latin Empire of Constantinople, installing Baldwin IX, Count of Flanders, as Emperor.

Both sides paused for desultory negotiations before the war recommenced ; John's position was now stronger, thanks to confirmation that Count Baldwin of Flanders and Renaud of Boulogne had renewed the anti-French alliances they had previously agreed to with Richard.

On Christmas Day 1100, Baldwin I, first king of the Frankish Kingdom of Jerusalem, was crowned in Bethlehem, and that year a Latin episcopate was also established in the town.

Raymond himself refused to do so and left for Tripoli ; Baldwin of Ibelin also refused, gave up his fiefs, and left for Antioch.
