E. H. Gerrish, of Bangor, is now recognized as the first person to produce wood-and-canvas canoes commercially, but other Maine builders soon followed, including, B. N. Morris, of Veazie, E. M. White, of Old Town, and, of course, the Gray family of the Old Town Canoe Co.

A fatal accident on the Bangor and Piscataquis Railroad between Bangor and Old Town in 1848 is the subject of the earliest known railroad song, Henry Sawyer.

This process, which would begin in Frankfort, would end with the founding of Bangor, Brewer, Orono, Old Town and other inland settlements, and the eventual restriction of the Penobscot people to their major village at " Indian Old Town ", or the present Penobscot Indian Reservation.

The Penobscot people long inhabited the area between present-day Old Town, Maine and Bangor, and still occupy tribal land on the nearby Penobscot Indian Island Reservation.

The tribe was eventually left with only their main village on an island up-river from Bangor, called “ Indian Old Town ” by the settlers.

Historically, the settlement is linked with St. Máelrubai ( Old Irish form ) or Maelrubha, who came to Scotland in 671 from the major Irish monastery of Bangor, County Down.

The Big House by Mildred Wasson, published in 1926, describes a wealthy family in decline in early 20th century Bangor ( renamed ' Hamlin ').

In Bangor she attended Bangor Presbyterian School, and while in Portsmouth Lyndon House School, and subsequently Portsmouth Grammar School, developing, as she recalled, " the usual Anglo-Irish sense of belonging nowhere ".

Penelope Schwartz Robinson, UMF professor of English was selected from about 350 qualified applicants as a Literary Arts Fellow of the Maine Arts Commission for 2009, and presented her work at an awards showcase at the Bangor Opera House on November 21, 2008.

In Montreal, English born architect John Ostell worked on a significant number of remarquable constructions in the Georgian style such as the Old Montreal Custom House and the Grand séminaire de Montréal.

Also of interest are the High Lighthouse ( 1818 ); the unusual Treadwheel Crane ( late 17th century ); the Electric Palace Cinema ( 1911 ), one of the oldest purpose-built cinemas to survive complete with its original projection room and ornamental frontage still intact and operational ; the Old Custom Houses on West Street ; and a number of Victorian shopfronts.

There is little notable building from the later parts of the 20th century, but major recent additions include the lifeboat station and two new structures for Trinity House ; that organisation's office building, next door to the Old Custom Houses, was completed in 2005.
