The first incarnation of X-Ray Spex existed from mid-1976 to 1979, during which time they released five singles —" Oh Bondage, Up Yours ", " Identity ", " The Day the World Turned Day-Glo ", " Germ Free Adolescents ", and " Highly Inflammable "— and one album, Germ Free Adolescents.

However, the band did produce at least one collection of music videos, which were issued on the 1982 Pioneer Artists laserdisc " The Tubes Video " ( this videodisc contained versions of twelve of the band's hits, including " White Punks on Dope ", " Mondo Bondage ", " Talk to Ya Later ", and several others from yet-to-be-completed " The Completion Backwards Principle " album, in slickly produced music videos based on the group's stage shows ).

Despite this activity, the band did not release another studio album until 2001, six years after Freedom Bondage.

In the essay " Iggy Pop: Blowtorch in Bondage " critic Lester Bangs calls the album a " documentation of the Iggy holocaust at its most nihilistically out of control.

On December 3, 2009 several members of the Cockettes ( Fayette Hauser, Scrumbly Koldewyn, Rumi Missabu, Sweet Pam, Tahara ) came together at SFMOMA for a rare screening of the films Tricia's Wedding, Palace, and Elevator Girls in Bondage followed by discussions and memorable Cockettes moments.
