TBS founder Ted Turner started the Cable Music Channel in 1984, designed to play a broader mix of music videos than MTV's rock format allowed.

Launched on Tuesday January 1, 1985 in the old space of Turner Broadcasting's short-lived Cable Music Channel, the original purpose of the channel was to build on the success of MTV by playing music videos, but targeting a slightly older demographic than its sister channel, focusing on the lighter, softer side of popular music.

Many digital cable and telco companies carry Music Choice, including Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Charter Communications, Cablevision, Cox Communications, Verizon FiOS, AT & T U-verse, Grande Communications, Service Electric Cable TV, CenturyLink and Bright House Networks.

Music Choice ( formerly known as Digital Cable Radio ) was the first digital audio broadcast service in the world and, under its founder and CEO David Del Beccaro, launched in test markets circa 1987.

Music Choice is a partnership owned by a consortium, including Comcast Cable Communications, Time Warner, Cox Communications, EMI Music, Microsoft Corporation, Motorola, Inc., and Sony Corporation of America.

Cable television also allowed for the debut of game shows such as Supermarket Sweep ( Lifetime ), Trivial Pursuit and Family Challenge ( Family Channel ), and Double Dare ( Nickelodeon ).

The case was resolved in Scotland, and the Channel Islands and later still in Northern Ireland, allowing the ITV Sport Channel to launch in the non-Carlton and Granada regions ( although it was never made available in the Channel Islands, as the islands do not have DTT or Cable and it never appeared on Sky Digital ).

Even as larger multiple system operators such as Cox Communications and Marcus Cable began to offer The Disney Channel on their basic tiers, Walt Disney Company executives continued to deny any plans to convert the channel to an ad-supported basic service, referring to the switches to basic on some systems as part of a five-year " hybrid " strategy ; allowing providers to offer it as either a pay service or a basic service.

Though Disney Channel was no longer considered a premium channel, the National Cable & Telecommunications Association had long continued to register the channel among the U. S. premium channels in its subscription base rankings ( however, the channel now appears in the NCTA's list of the top-ranked basic cable channels by number of subscribers ).

In 1999, Disney Channel began notifying cable operators who continued to carry the network as a premium service that they must move the channel to their basic cable tiers or remove it altogether, stipulating that it would not renew carriage agreements with providers ( such as Time Warner Cable and Comcast, which were the last remaining major cable providers offering the channel as a premium service ) that chose to continue carrying the network as a pay channel.

In the ' 90s, RuPaul was known in the UK for his appearances on the Channel 4 series Manhattan Cable, a weekly series produced by World of Wonder and presented by American Laurie Pike about New York's wild and wacky public-access television system.
