* 837 – Halley's Comet and Earth experienced their closest approach to one another when their separating distance equalled 0. 0342 AU ( 3. 2 million miles ).

According to one story that first appeared in a 1475 posthumous biography and was subsequently embellished and popularized by Pierre-Simon Laplace, Callixtus III excommunicated the 1456 apparition of Halley's Comet, believing it to be an ill omen for the Christian defenders of Belgrade from the besieging armies of the Ottoman Empire.

Halley is the most active of all the periodic comets, with others, such as Comet Encke and Comet Holmes, displaying activity one or two orders of magnitude weaker.

More than one theory has associated Encke's Comet with impacts of cometary material on Earth, and with cultural significance.
